Does Your Income Live Up to What You are Worth?

Does what you are being paid show up in your purse or bank account?

Seriously, is it? On one level this can seem pretty simplistic but when it comes right down to it, getting paid for your expertise can be more difficult than it seems.

Women especially, can struggle with this piece.  Truth be told, most women undercharge. Are you one of them?

It can feel like Sophie’s Choice sometimes.  Can I serve my clients with my gifts and knowledge or can I earn a great income?  You can do both, I promise you.  It is a lie that being heartfelt and authentic means you have to be poor.

I know you have no intention of devaluing yourself but when you set low fees, when you barter or discount your fees, that is exactly what your are doing.  You are saying what you have to offer has little value.  You are saying that the results your clients get from working with you is of little benefit to them. If that were the situation then why would someone hire you to begin with?

I understand that the work you do comes from your heart of hearts.  It comes from your soul. I also understand that you wish to make a difference in the world. You have a joy and a passion for the work you do and the people who hire you. At the same time you want to be financially successful and you deserve to be.

When I hear from women that I know are very gifted and have so much to share with their clients but they are making little or no money my first thought is “Why are you hiding?”

“Why are you playing so small?”

Your relationship with money may have a history of its own. It may have something to do with how your parents or other family members dealt with the attitude of money. It may come from somewhere else that you might not even be aware of.

Did you hear things such as:

  • “Money doesn’t grow on trees.”
  • “It’s not about the money.”
  • “People with lots of money are selfish and greedy.”
  • “If I make more money than my husband or my friends I will feel uncomfortable.”

Yes, money does not grow on trees and yes, it IS about the money as well.  It’s why you work; it’s how you support yourself. You needn’t be selfish or greedy to be a success. In fact the women I know who make incredible amounts of money are not at all selfish or greedy, they give freely because they can.

I assume you are an expert in the work you do. It is important that your clients get the best you have to offer.  You wouldn’t have it any other way!

What results do your clients get from working with you?

How do these results impact their finances or money?

How do these financial or money results affect your client’s health and well-being?

How does your client’s health and well-being affect their family and other relationships?

Finally, how do your client’s relationships affect their future or their potential?

When you honestly look at the work you do with your clients, can you see how deeply you affect their lives?  Can you see the impact you make?  If not, you are not looking close enough. Is there a chance you are hiding from yourself?

I believe it is time for you stop hiding. You can’t serve the people you are meant to serve by doing this. I believe it is time for you to really take a look at the results your clients get from working with you.

I believe it is time for you to step into your power as a therapist, a coach or consultant.  It is time to unveil your value!

My coaches’ request to you: What is your first step going to be? Write it down. Tell your coach or your friend. Now be accountable and make it happen!
