Boomer Women: How to Balance Business and Hugs

MP3 File

Does this sound like a strange title? Maybe, but it’s important.

When I say the word ‘hugs’ I really do mean it literally. I mean your arms wrapped around the back of someone you care about kind of hugs. Not wimpy little patting on the shoulders kind of hugs. Those barely count. As a ‘recovered therapist’ I have always been a big fan of Virginia Satir. She was a prominent family therapist and one of her strongest messages that took hold of me was about the importance of daily hugs.

She quotes: “We need 4 hugs a day for survival. We need 8 hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.” Wow.

Does that seem like a lot to you? Do you get your minimum of 4 hugs per day? What about 8 or 12 hugs? Maybe a better question is how many hugs do you give out every day?

Running a successful business is no simple task. It takes planning, commitment, and time, but the results are worth every minute. The women I work with put their heart and soul into building their businesses but balancing work with the rest of your life is key.

You also don’t just have that one ‘thing’ to do in your life. You may have children or parents who need you. You may have many other responsibilities that take up your attention and time.

You may have a pretty busy schedule and if you can cross off everything on your ‘to do’ list you have had a good day. You also may be adding so many other ‘to dos’ so that your list is never really complete or finished.

Do you take the time to nourish your most important relationships? Are you able to slip in those necessary hugs to those you care about as you go about your day?

You can have the most successful, profitable and fun business in the world, but if you lose relationships along the way that is too high of a price to pay. Without relationships all you have is your work. I don’t need to tell you that this is not a balanced life, it is not a healthy life and in the long run you will lose. You may lose yourself to your business and most likely lose your business.

Many of you have home offices which may make this more of a challenge, so you may have to be a little bit creative but don’t despair, if you set an intention it will happen. I have faith in you.

No business is important enough to lose relationships over. Nurture them every single day and you will be rewarded.

How many hugs did you give today?

Keep in mind; you get back what you give.
